Day 2 :: Simplifying in the Kitchen

We’re going to start our journey of simplifying in the kitchen. For me, an organized and clean kitchen makes the entire house seem cleaner.

Day 2 Project : Clean out the fridge/freezer/pantry.

Today’s project is a major step towards simplifying your kitchen. Clean out your fridge, freezer and pantry. Having an organized fridge, freezer and pantry makes meal planning and preparation much easier. You can easily see the foods and leftovers you have on hand which helps to prevent food waste. Plus, it’s nice when these spaces are organized instead of  haphazardly crammed full of food!

Pull out all of the expired, unidentifiable food and food you know your family is not going to eat. Throw out or compost the expired foods and if there are foods that you know you’re not going to use that are still good, donate to a food pantry or give to friends (please don’t throw out perfectly good food!)

Once you’ve removed the foods that don’t belong, wipe down the shelves and drawers; defrost your freezer if it needs to be done.

When the space is decluttered and clean, organize to make it easy for you to find the foods you need and inventory what you have while planning meals.

Be sure to visit again tomorrow as we continue our efforts of simplifying in the kitchen.

  1. Fridge and pantry done! The freezer will need to be reserved for the weekend when my husband can supervise the babies. 🙂 Really excited about this month!!! What a great idea!

  2. I did the fridge and it is so, so much nicer now!!! I just did the pantry over the weekend when we shopped so that one was all good 🙂 The fridge gets messy so fast so I tried to keep like things together (like sandwich stuff) to try and prevent the chaos!

  3. Haha! I just posted before and after photos of my freezer on my blog! You are so right. A clean fridge makes a HUGE difference. Lost food doesn't get wasted. Time doesn't get wasted. You picked a good place to start!
